We Are Charlie Kirk: Love vs. Hate in Politics and Faith
On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was assassinated. The aftermath was potentially worse, as many celebrated his death. Hate seemed to win, but vigils spread across the country like wildfire. Charlie’s memorial was a beautiful one, with a clear gospel presentation and a poignant message of forgiveness. Despite the hate, love never fails.
What Charlie Stood For and Believed
The most important thing Charlie Kirk wanted to be remembered for was his courage for his faith. Charlie was a Christian first. His worldview and political stances flowed from his biblical beliefs. More than politics or debate, Charlie loved to talk about his relationship with Christ.
Charlie Kirk believed in the true gospel. He said the best approach to the gospel was to start with the “bad news” by talking about how everyone has broken the ten commandments: “How many are you violating? You deserve to go to hell. You will, unless you give your life to Christ. There’s only one way to be (saved). It’s not all the good things you did... It’s whether or not you have Jesus as your Lord and Savior.”
Charlie constantly spoke about how he was a sinner and Jesus saved his life. He invited John MacArthur to give a gospel presentation because people were learning to “drink from the streams of liberty,” and “they want to find its Source.” Charlie was called many things (most of them untrue), but in truth, he was martyred for his faith. His convictions were a result of being a Bible-believing Christian. His belief in Jesus was also why he kept talking to students. He said, “When people stop talking, violence happens.” He fostered communication on both sides of the aisle, reminding his supporters to show respect to everyone, even those who were disrespectful.
Why “We Are Charlie Kirk”
Charlie Kirk believed many of the same things average conservative Christians do. He spoke about his views more and knew more about politics, but otherwise, he held mainstream Christian views. Christians love the people around them (even “enemies”) and want what’s best for them. They want to restore sinners to their Creator in the same way that they have been restored. Christians don’t wish death on people.
For a long time, I thought, “Christians are martyred in other countries, but not here.” I can’t say that now. Some Christians are realizing our silence didn’t keep the peace… it only emboldened the opposition to become more hateful and violent. I learned faith was OK as long as it was not connected to politics in any way. “I go to church on Sundays” was fine, as long as I didn't go so far as to say, “abortion is murder.” I shut up just to keep the peace.
This is the message conservative Christians got from those who celebrated Charlie’s assassination:
It’s OK to be a Christian as long as you don’t believe or do what the Bible says.
As long as you don’t stand up for the truth…
As long as you’re willing to compromise your beliefs or undermine what God’s Word says by distancing yourself from scripture…
As long as you don’t yield to God’s commands and instead enjoy a vague “flavor of Christianity” without having it mean anything…
As long as you aren’t willing to order your life around Jesus, the gospel, and the Word…
As long as Jesus is only your Savior and not your Lord…
You’re OK with me.
If not, though, you should die.
And I’ll be the first to laugh, to applaud, to dance, to sing.
The Real Enemy is Not the Left
This is not a matter of right vs. left. This is a matter of light vs. dark. This is believers vs. the world. Our task? To seek out those who are now as we once were (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).
We are all sinners. We are all guilty. It is good to remember “and such were some of you.” We have been given new hearts in place of our hearts of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26-27), and it’s the only reason we now desire to follow the Lord. Christians, fix your eyes on Jesus and pray for the souls of the lost people in the world on both sides of the aisle. Ask God for opportunities to bring the gospel… then do it.
What Satan Intends for Evil, God Uses for Good
People have been leaving the left in droves, and going to church for the first time in decades. Eyes are being opened. People can no longer plead, “I’m basically a good person,” when colleagues and friends cheer for the death of a man who wanted to talk. It’s clear: man is inherently sinful. God continually frustrates Satan’s plans. Therefore, the existence of God’s children are a source of frustration for Satan’s children. Throughout history, people have tried to eliminate God’s people. The early church scattered because of persecution, but that same persecution led to a huge expansion of the gospel.
